The Cessation of Suffering Is the Cessation of the Three Poisons

The Cessation of Suffering Is the Cessation of the Three Poisons

The Four Sufferings of birth, aging, illness, and death arise through individual karma and the cycle of birth and death (saṃsāra). Together with sufferings arising in relation to other people and things, they constitute the Eight Sufferings. Adding the Four Sufferings arising from collective social karma—dictatorship, war, nuclear catastrophe, and civilizational collapse—we have the Twelve Sufferings. Their cessation requires: (1) the cessation of delusion regarding the self (self-view); (2) the cessation of greed and hatred toward other people and things; and (3) the cessation of the Three Poisons—greed, hatred, and delusion—embodied in the myth of the state and perpetuated through collective karma.

Dependent Origination, the universal law of the arising of phenomena through causes and conditions, reveals that all things are interrelated and relative. Therefore, the ego conceived as an isolated, independent ruler is merely a conventional notion or practical designation, not an ultimate truth. Delusion concerning “I and mine” (self and self-possession) gives rise to birth, death, and saṃsāra, while the cessation of delusion brings about the cessation of suffering.

In addition to the Four Sufferings of birth, aging, illness, and death, attachment and aversion toward other people and things give rise to the suffering of separation from loved ones, encountering those we dislike, and not obtaining what we desire. These sufferings are summarized as the suffering of the rampant Five Aggregates. That is, suffering arises when the karmic winds of the Three Poisons—greed, hatred, and delusion—rage through the Five Aggregates of body, feelings, ideas, formations, and consciousness, conditioned by karma (actions, habits, and heredity).

With the development of city-states, Pyramidal Civilization (: urbanization, from civets: city) emerged, characterized by centralized rule under commanders of warfare and other leaders, together with increasing urbanization. Pyramidal structures remain in major players, fictitious bodies, such as states, corporations, media, religions, and educational institutions. Their collective karma produces the Four Sufferings of dictatorship, war, nuclear catastrophe, and civilizational collapse, driving today’s interconnected global crises toward a dead end.

The history of Pyramidal Civilization extends back approximately five thousand years. Before it, however, lie more than ten billion years of cosmic history, billions of years of life’s history, and millions of years of human history, including cultures such as Japan’s Jōmon culture, which lasted more than ten thousand years. Approximately twenty-five hundred years ago, the Axial Age initiated a movement to reverse the direction of Pyramidal Civilization and move toward a Culture of Life Indra-net. This current continues into the present through movements for social reform.

The struggle for the Three Ms—Money, Matter, and Might—in material civilization produces the Five Calamities: Delusion, Bondage, Discrimination, Exploitation, and Destruction. In contrast, the Three Learnings—Morality, Synthesis, and Prognosis (śīla, samādhi, prajñā)—of spiritual culture produce the Five Blessings: Awakening, Freedom, Equality, Friendship, and Peace. The development and dissemination of the cultural values of Truth, Goodness, Beauty, and Holiness, particularly advances in science and technology, have encouraged the awakening and action of the people. Movements for democracy, peace, life, and coexistence have become a great worldwide current, and preventing its reversal is a responsibility shared by all.

The religious, spiritual, and cultural revolutions of the Axial Age expressed confidence in the ultimate triumph of universal law and taught that its realization was already taking place among individuals and communities. In particular, the Awakened Way (Buddhism) demonstrated that anyone, at any time, can attain awakening and peace (nirvāṇa), and that this realization is possible both individually—as the Dharma-body (dharmakāya)—and collectively—as the Saṅgha and Dharma Realm (dharmadhātu). Thus, the Four-Directional Saṅgha, a community extending beyond local boundaries, was established.

Still sitting (zazen), practice accessible to everyone, calm the winds of karma, enable us to abide in nirvāṇa, and allow us to awaken to and abide in the Dharma. In the world of Dependent Origination and karma, we live and act together and share suffering. Yet in the world of the cessation of conditions and the Dharma, there are unshakability, fearlessness, deathlessness, selflessness, freedom from suffering, limitless life, light, love, lucidity, and liberation. Thus, coexistence, shared joy, the World of Supreme Bliss, and the Pure Land become possible.

The currents of the cosmos and life, governed by universal law, are characterized by a great diversity of forms and flourishing forces. On our water planet, Earth, abundant greenery and diverse flowers are beautiful; rich and flourishing life, with faces blossoming into smiles, is good.

The saying “Sharing suffering halves it, and sharing joy doubles it” suggests that, when more than eight billion people share with one another, suffering can approach zero (0) and joy can approach infinity (∞). Conversely, when people struggle to take from one another, suffering approaches infinity and joy approaches zero. Worse still, such struggles inevitably lead toward the end of the world, threatening the entire planetary system of life.

Individual suffering associated with birth and death arises from the delusion that the ego is an isolated, independent ruler, while suffering in relation to others arises from greed and hatred. Similarly, collective karmic suffering arises from the greed, hatred, and delusion of Pyramidal Civilization, which regards one’s own state as absolutely sovereign. On a multilane road governed by traffic laws, speeding, invading other lanes, and driving against traffic illustrate how actions driven by the Three Poisons violate universal law and can cause fatal injuries and death.

The transformation from the Three Poisons—greed, hatred, and delusion—to the Three Learnings—morality, synthesis, and prognosis— means understanding and realizing Dependent Origination and no-self; calming anger and cultivating compassion; sharing and practicing generosity; and transforming self-view, attachment, and hostility into awakening, synthesis, and restraint. It means cultivating ourselves and others together as friends, moving beyond the divisions of clans, tribes, ethnic groups, and states toward the wholly wholesome integration of humanity, all living beings, and the environment.

To protect our irreplaceable lives, inherited through four billion years of life’s history, we must accomplish a Copernican transformation together as friends: from the narrow vision of “peering at the ceiling through the hollow of a reed,” characterized by sin (separated sickness) and the Three Onlys—Money Only, Self Only, and Now Only—to the comprehensive vision of “looking down upon the Earth from a spacecraft,” characterized by holiness (wholly wholesomeness) and the Three Alls—All Lives, the Whole World, and All Future Generations.

Let us accomplish this Copernican transformation together, as friends of all life!
