Our Children
I’ve recently begun volunteering at a local elementary school, just a few blocks from my house. I volunteer through a reading program, so the emphasis is on reading with the students, just helping them to get a little more practice, encouraging them, helping them to build some confidence. They’re fun to work with, and I’ve really been enjoying my time there.
It’s also interesting to see how they learn to read. I’ve tutored before, but I don’t have a background in childhood education, so my observations are just those of a lay person. I’ve been fortunate to see many times how the act of decoding — sounding out individual words one by one — evens out over time into sentences that flow more smoothly, as if the words become invisible and the text just goes right in.
I recognize that this slow binding with words, language, and concepts over the course of a lifetime creates a sense of self, and that from time to time — maybe while chopping vegetables, or setting policy, or looking at the stars, or walking in the woods — words will be suspended, and that sense of self will fall away for a moment.
I wish these students well. All children, their teachers, and parents, and pets, and their schools and the people who help them to operate, I wish them well. May we all create a world where they can be happy, healthy, and safe.
