Solution to Dictatorship Sufferings

Solution to Dictatorship Suffering

The suffering caused by dictatorship is evident when we look at dictatorial states and their histories. Tens of millions of people have been killed through war, execution, social upheaval, famine, and other causes. People have been deprived of equality, peace, freedom, self-governance, and other basic conditions of human dignity; deceived through lies, disinformation, manipulated education, and propaganda; violated in their human rights, sexuality, and generations; and misled throughout their lives. The resulting suffering spreads across both space and time.

The possibility of dictatorship lies within the very structure of our pyramidal civilization—states, corporations, media, religions, educational institutions, and other hierarchical organizations. City-states, made possible by the accumulation of surplus, divided insiders from outsiders by city walls, engaged in warfare, produced slavery and social classes, and developed pyramidal organizations characterized by centralized power and control. Such structures made it possible for those at the summit to become dictators.

Before states and urban civilization, human cultural life and societies were generally characterized more strongly by coexistence, sharing, cooperation, interdependence, relative equality, and peace, with less pronounced differentiation and specialization between self and others. As individual possession of material resources and power expanded and social roles became increasingly specialized, however, consciousness of the individual self became increasingly intensified.

With the pursuit of fame and fortune—might and matter—and the increasing possession and accumulation of conveniences and commodities, the wealth and power of cities also increased. Competition for survival intensified the karmic Triple Poisons of greed, hatred, and delusion, while colonization, warfare, social classes, and other forms of domination expanded. The fundamental consciousness of the individual self grew stronger, as did identification with the state, together with competition for the 3M: Money, Matter, and Might.

Through the concentration of money, matter, and might, social rulers gather around themselves powerful interest groups—what may be called MAGIC: the Military-Academic-Government-Industry Complex. By manipulating the masses through self-interest, national interest, myths, religion, disinformation, division, fear, and other means, rulers consolidate their positions and may become kings, emperors, and dictators.

Once dictatorship is established, it may become hereditary. Discrimination, exploitation, and control over information, knowledge, occupations, authority, and other social resources become increasingly entrenched through differences of position, status, and class, eventually producing feudal societies. Humanity has passed through the agricultural and productive revolution beginning roughly ten thousand years ago, the urban and social revolution beginning roughly five thousand years ago, and the spiritual and cultural revolution beginning around twenty-five hundred years ago, bringing us to the present.

The great transformation that sought to turn the axis of pyramidal civilization was the religious, spiritual, and cultural revolution. Through the universal law called Dharma, Dao, Dei, and other names, it sought to transform the Five Calamities arising from struggles for the 3M into the Five Blessings through sharing the 3H—Holy Life, Heart, and Harmony. The Dharma of the Awakened Way identified this universal law as Dependent Origination, teaching that all phenomena are interrelated and relative.

Dependent Origination (origination through causes and conditions) teaches that no thing and no person exists in isolation or as an independent sovereign entity. We can flourish together only through the society and world of coexistence and cooperation. Awakening to this reality, verifying it in our own lives, and acting upon it, we should fulfill our responsibilities to others together with protecting our own rights. If everyone observes the Five Precepts and the Global Ethic, the suffering caused by dictatorship can be overcome.

Democratic societies institutionalize separation of powers and checks and balances among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches in order to prevent dictatorship. Yet executive power can tend to accumulate effective authority and weaken the legislative and judicial branches. Voters therefore bear an important responsibility in elections: they should carefully examine whether candidates uphold the Global Ethic, vote accordingly, and continually demand that public officials remember that they are public servants.

To overcome the suffering of dictatorship, every person must awaken to the realization that each of us is a jewel in Indra’s Net of life, society, and the world. Rather than acting merely for immediate self-interest or national interest, we should act for the common society and world of past, present, and future generations.

Let us therefore move together—

from zero-sum competition for selfish gain and mutual destruction
to cooperative, synergistic action and co-prosperity;
from separation to interdependence;
from monopoly to sharing;
from domination to responsibility;
from the isolated self to the shared world.

Let us strive together, not as rivals struggling against one another, but as friends sharing and sustaining the one interdependent world.
