総合（Synthesis）

三昧（samādhi）は、禅那（jhāna、禅）が「心の一境性（一点集中）」と説明されることなどから、通常「集中」と訳されます。しかし、その実相は、単なる集中的な専注ではなく、心身世界全体が完全に統合・統一され、調和のうちに安定することです。

これはとりわけ、坐禅、そして只管打坐――全身心界を挙げて坐ること――に当てはまります。そこでは、音、感覚、呼吸、姿勢、意識のすべてが開かれたまま、業的活動から解放されています。何一つ排除する必要はなく、散乱した活動は静まり、分かたれることのない平和な現前に落ち着きます。

第二禅終わりに向かうにつれて、生存に関わる欲（第一禅の終わりに向かって静まる感情的欲と比較）、生成、見解（とりわけ「私」「私のもの」という見解）、無明（涅槃を証していないこと）という「四漏」は、それぞれ「四暴流」に対応し、捨（upekkhā―字義は業を「捨てる」こと）において静まります。

samādhi は、語源的に、サンスクリット語の saṃhitā（一つに集められた全体）、また synthesis（ギリシア語 syn-thesis――共に置くこと）、さらに integrate（ラテン語 integrāre――触れられず、損なわれていない完全な状態にすること）と同じ根本的な意味をもっています。したがって三昧とは、業・輪廻の領域に生まれ入る以前の、自己「本来の面目」・本性なのです。

現代科学は、膨張し冷却しつつある宇宙の観察から、インフレーションとビッグバンを推論し、その過程から銀河や生命が生じ得たと考えます。熱力学第二法則は、集中したエネルギーが平均化され、より平等で安定した状態へ向かうことを示しています。

人間世界もまた、一方向的な金字塔文明と、そのもたらした地球問題群――気候変動など――から、地球化、民主化、情報化あるいは共同化〔communization――communication（意思疎通）と communalization（共同化）〕へと、同じ方向をたどっているように見えます。

人間世界は人間がつくったものです。それゆえ、その仕組みと諸問題を変えるには、人間自身の努力が必要です。「修証一等」とは、修行がなければ、涅槃・覚醒の証もないということです。実践のみが、物事を完成させ、現実のものとします。

普遍的で実践可能な禅を修し、非人間的・非倫理的なゼロサムの争い――戦争、核による大破局など――を超えて、今ここにある清浄な平和（浄土、あるいは極楽と呼ばれるもの）を味わい、分かち合いましょう。そして、すべてのものとの限りない相乗的総合のうちに、真の平和と繁栄を実現しましょう！

Synthesis

 

Samādhi is usually translated as concentration due partly to the description of jhana (:zen) as “the one-pointedness of the mind, but the reality of it is the complete integration, unification, and settledness in harmony of the total mind-body-world—not merely concentrated focusing.

This is especially appropriate for zazen and shikantaza, total sitting, where sounds, sensations, breathing, posture, and awareness remain open, liberated from karmic actitivities. Nothing needs to be excluded; scattered activity settles into undivided peaceful presence.

Toward the second zen stage the “four flushings” of lust (for survival, cp. lust stilled toward the end of the first stage), becoming, view (esp. I, my), nescience (no witness of nirvana) which correspond to the “four floodings” stills in equanimity (upekhā, lit. discard of karma).

Samādhi is etymologically same as Sanskrit saṃhitā (collected whole) also synthesis (from Greek syn-thesis: placing together) and integrate (from Greek integrare: un-touched: intact). So, samadhi is one’s original face/nature before birth (into karma/samsara realm).

Modern science induces Inflation and Big Bang from the observation of the expanding, cooling universe, where galaxies and life could be originated. The second law of thermodynamics tells concentrated energy levelling into more equal stable state.

Human world seems to follow the same pattern of globalization, democratization, informatization or communization (communication-cum-communalization) from the uni-directional pyramidal civilization with the global problematique (climate change, etc.).

Human world is man-made, which requires human effort to change such system and problems. “Unity of cultivation and verification” means without cultivation practice, there is no verification of nirvana/awakening. Only practice makes perfect and practical.

Please practice universally practical zen and enjoy and share the pure peace (called pure-land or paradise) here now transcending the inhuman, unethical zero-sum struggle with war, nuke holocaust, etc. to the true peace and prosperity in limitless synergy synthesis with all!
